Following the success of both Tale of the Nine-Tailed (2020) and its wildly popular prequel Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 (2023), fans have been anxiously waiting for news on a potential third installment. Well, the wait is finally over — Tale of the Nine-Tailed Season 3 is officially in the works for a 2025 release!
Lee Dong Wook will once again reprise his role as the charismatic gumiho, Lee Yeon. After battling ancient spirits, jumping timelines, and even confronting gods, Season 3 promises to bring his most challenging test yet. Set in the near future, this season introduces a futuristic backdrop where myth and machine collide.
Kim Bum also returns as Lee Rang, whose tragic arc has remained one of the most memorable in the series. Rumors suggest he might be brought back in a mysterious new form or as a guardian spirit, possibly serving as Lee Yeon’s inner voice or protector across dimensions.
Season 3 is said to explore Korean folklore merging with futuristic urban legends. With the gumiho facing extinction, Lee Yeon is forced into an uneasy alliance with old gods, human scientists, and time-travelers. As his powers wane, a new villain rises—one with a secret that could shatter the realm between humans and supernatural beings.
The romance plotline will also take center stage again. While Lee Yeon and Ji Ah’s love story found closure in earlier seasons, new stills suggest emotional turbulence as destiny rewrites itself. Will love endure across timelines once more?
While the original leads return, several high-profile castings are rumored, including a fierce goddess played by a rising star (possibly Han So Hee or Kim Ji Won) and a cyber-spirit warrior trained to hunt foxes. These characters promise to shake the foundation of the gumiho legend and take the story in an entirely new direction.
Production is expected to begin in late 2024, with an official Disney+ and tvN premiere slated for summer 2025. The director from 1938 is returning, and the creative team has promised fewer filler episodes and a more cinematic experience this time around.
Early concept teasers already show grand cityscapes clashing with hidden realms, ancient foxes walking among AI robots, and Lee Yeon clutching a blade forged from forgotten god-blood.
Tale of the Nine-Tailed Season 3 is shaping up to be the most ambitious and mythically rich chapter in the series. With beloved actors, a mind-bending story, and fan-favorite characters returning in shocking ways, this season will not only satisfy loyal viewers but might also attract a whole new wave of K-drama enthusiasts.
